Dr. Fatih Birol, GRF member and Chief Economist and Director of Global Energy Economics at the International Energy Agency (IEA), convened with GRF members and a group of GRF Young Scholars at a dinner on December 23, 2013. Dr. Birol delivered a speech on macro changes in the world energy outlook as well as their medium-to-long term implications for the global energy demand and trade, highlighting that some long-held tenets of the energy sector are being rewritten. During his speech, Dr. Birol asserted that long-term solutions to global challenges such as climate change and energy poverty remain scarce as high energy prices also add to the pressure on policymakers. Following his speech, Dr. Birol received a wide range of questions from the participants.
