Prof. Vali R. Nasr, Khaddouri Professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), addressed GRF and GRF Community Members during an online meeting held on December 16, 2024. In his speech, titled "Recent Developments in the Middle East and Shifting Power Dynamics", Prof. Nasr addressed current developments in the Middle East and their impact on global power balances. Prof. Nasr discussed how the political and security environment of the region might shape following the ongoing wars and the collapse of the nearly half-century-long Assad regime in Syria. He also shared insights on what this situation means for the Syrian people and how regional powers might adapt to changing conditions, particularly in the context of the incoming second Trump administration. Following his speech, Prof. Nasr answered the participants’ questions.
