A new book authored by Mrs. Füsun Türkmen, GRF Member and Associate Professor of International Relations at Galatasaray University, has been published.
“The mandate was denied…”
“Turkey says ‘no’ to the States.”
“Americans wrap sacks around the heads of Turkish soldiers!”
“Turkey has the highest rate of anti-American sentiment in the world…”
Going by these headlines printed since 2003, we could have maintained, until a short while ago, that Turkish-American relations had reached a nadir, even though the alliance between Turkey and the US has been one of the most important strategic alliances of the 20th century… Today, however, authorities on both sides point out that the relations have never been better and indeed that they constitute a “Model Partnership.”
“So where do Turkish-American relations really stand now, after having visited both extremes? What potentials do they have? What risks do they carry?”
It has become imperative to find answers to these questions in order to understand the balance of power in today’s world.
Turning its back on crises, ideologies, and conspiracy theories, this study examines the transition of Turkish-American relations from a “Fragile Alliance” to a “Model Partnership”, looking at it from a historical perspective since the early 19th century when relations between the two countries were first established.
