From GRF Members; Dr. Fatih Birol was appointed as the next Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Dr.
Fatih Birol is one of the founding members of GRF and Co-Chair of GRF’s
Energy Task Force that published the report entitled “Turkish Energy
Strategy in the 21st
Century” in 2013. Up until his appointment as the Executive Director,
he conducted the role of Chief Economist and Director of Global Energy
Economics at the IEA. Dr. Fatih Birol has also overseen the publication
of the World Energy Outlook, IEA’s flagship publication, recognized as the most authoritative source for the strategic analysis of the global energy markets.
The IEA was founded in response to the 1973-1974 oil crisis and its role
has evolved and expanded over time in order to provide international
governance faced with issues such as uncertainties on the global energy
market, European energy security issues, and the substantial growth in
energy demand by emerging markets. Today, the IEA is one of the key
institutions of the global dialogue on energy, working with member and
non-member countries on energy security, economic development, and
environmental awareness; providing a mechanism for coordinating
emergency response to oil market disruptions as well as providing
authoritative statistics, analysis and recommendations to member states.
Dr. Birol will take over the executive office on August 31, 2015.
