Current Developments in the Ukraine Crisis
Panel Meeting
January 20, 2022
On January 20, 2022, Former Ambassador to Moscow Hüseyin Diriöz and Former Undersecretary to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Chief Monitor, OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (F), Ambassador (R) Ertuğrul Apakan, addressed GRF and GRF Community members at an online panel meeting moderated by GRF President, Ambassador (R) Selim Yenel. Examining the current developments in the crisis in Ukraine, which has increasingly caused alarm in the international community over the past few weeks, the panelists evaluated the dynamics of the crisis through the framework of Ukraine-Russia-NATO relations, and informed the participants on the probable short and medium-term trajectory of Russian activity on the Ukraine border. Stating that a Ukraine-NATO rapprochement is a red line for Russian President Putin and that he will try to keep it from happening by any means necessary, the panelists discussed the effects of the power struggle between the NATO powers and Russia on Europe and beyond. Following their speeches, the panelists answered the participants’ questions under Ambassador (R) Yenel’s moderation.
