On November 23, 2021, Prof. Yakın Ertürk, Former UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Professor Emeritus of Sociology, Middle East Technical University, addressed GRF and GRF Community members at an online meeting. In her speech, Prof. Ertürk addressed the current progress being made to combat violence against women, as well as the struggle for social gender equality. In the shadow of Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, Prof. Ertürk stated that gender equality is increasingly under threat throughout Europe and beyond from far-right, authoritarian and populist movements, and expressed her impressions on the potential social and political hurdles facing womens’ rights in the near future. Following her speech, Prof. Ertürk answered the participants’ questions.
