On January 22, 2019, Sir David Logan, Ambassador (F) of the United Kingdom to Ankara, addressed GRF members at a roundtable meeting. In his speech, Sir David elaborated on the European security structure that emerged in the aftermath of the Second World War and evaluated the current state of Transatlantic relations. Touching upon the shifting geostrategic priorities of the US in the face of a rising China, and Russia’s increasingly assertive regional policies, Sir David emphasized that Europe would still have to depend on US security guarantees when faced with a major security threat. Within this framework, Sir David stressed that a potential EU army should be designed to complement NATO, rather than to replace it. Sir David also emphasized the importance enhanced security cooperation between the EU and non-member states such as Turkey and post-Brexit UK. Following his speech, Sir David answered the participants’ questions.
