On March 22, 2019, Ambassador Christian Berger, Head of the European Union (EU) Turkey Delegation addressed GRF members at a roundtable meeting. In his speech, Ambassador Berger outlined the areas of cooperation and contention between Turkey and the EU, and gave an overview of Turkey’s current accession status with regards to the customs union. Ambassador Berger explained that despite several setbacks, Turkey and the EU still share similar views on foreign policy and migration issues. With the upcoming elections in both Turkey and the EU in 2019, Ambassador Berger stressed the importance of increased communication and maintaining good relations. Following his speech, Ambassador Berger answered the participants’ questions.
