On June 21, 2019, Mr. Larry Kramer, President of William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Dean of Stanford Law School (F) addressed GRF members at a dinner. In his speech on the fundamental problems facing democratic governments around the world, Mr. Kramer identified the three core challenges as a failure of ideas, failure of local political institutions and problems with the media landscape. Stating that democracies need to find a better idea than neoliberalism to respond to challenges like climate change and wealth inequality, Mr. Kramer also warned against political polarization and assessed the impact of social media on communication. Following his speech, Mr. Kramer answered the participants’ questions.
