Roundtable Meeting with
Prof. Kemal Kirişci,
Brookings Institute Nonresident Senior Fellow
May 26, 2022
On May 26, 2022, Prof. Kemal Kirişci, Brookings Institute Nonresident Senior Fellow, addressed GRF and GRF Community members at a hybrid roundtable meeting. Speaking on the interaction between Turkey’s 2018 refugee agreement with the European Union and how it can apply to Turkey’s current refugee troubles, Prof. Kirişci discussed how to bring about a solution to the economic and political impasse brought on by the recent waves of refugees experienced by the country. Prof. Kirişci examined the various legal pathways available to Turkey within the legal framework of the EU refugee agreement, and stated that Turkey should focus its efforts in reducing future migration waves and trying to integrate the current refugee population in a healthier and more comprehensive way rather than trying to send back the refugees that are already living in Turkey. Following his speech, Prof. Kirişci answered the participants’ questions.
